by John Chamberlain, AC5CV

President: Rodney Baden K5YKC

Vice Pres: Terry Williams KD5KJU

Secretary: John Chamberlain AC5CV

Treasurer: Norris Martin KB5SLI

Director (2008):  Wayne Branscum KD5SMC

According to our bylaws, the “November meeting,” held on the Thursday following Thanksgiving, is known as the Club’s “Annual Meeting,” at which we elect the officers for the following year. As usually happens, that happens to be the first Thursday in December.

Your Nominating Committee (Norris Martin KB5SLI, Mike Ross N5MVL, and Wayne Branscum KD5SMC) has identified the list of candidates shown to the right who have agreed to serve if elected (or “re-elected,” as the case may be).

Come out to the Annual Meeting and help us take care of this important business.

Season’s Greetings

Here is hoping all had a Happy Thanksgiving last week. I would like to thank all of you for a very successful year in HOTARC. We have accomplished a lot and our members have really worked hard. If I started to name some of the members' accomplishments, I am sure I would miss one or someone. So let me just say to all: Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

God Bless

Committee Reports

·        ARES: Ed Hynan KC5KNI reported:

§         We are still seeking Net Control volunteers for the 2006 Monday night net.

§         The WMD exercise has been rescheduled for a December 8-11 time frame.

§         K5YKC had been appointed alternate District Races Officer (DRO). FYI, Charlie Schlieper N5TD of Temple is the DRO.)

§         With increased attention to RACES after recent hurricanes, we will probably recommend dual membership in ARES and RACES next year. Stay tuned.

§         Hurricane traffic: central Texas hams handled over 60,000 messages. Thanks to Leon Cheney K5ZZM for making it happen, and several area hams for over 20,000 man-hours to this effort!

·        Trailer: Mike Ross N5MVL had nothing to report.

·        Repeater: Norris Martin KB5SLI received the renewal request forms from the Texas VHF-FM Society (145.15, 146.98, and 442). He will investigate registering with the other coordinating agency (recently formed). K5YKC apologized that the 146.88 repeater was still not installed at his home.

·        Web page: John Chamberlain AC5CV reported that he formed a new mail list for all HOTARC members. Any HOTARC member can send mail to members@hotarc.org to instantly reach all the membership (who have email). Links to maps on our web page have been updated to use Google maps (can be zoomed).

·        ATV: David Bush KC5UOZ reported that his home station now has capability to remotely activate NASA-TV or KXXV weather radar via DTMF codes at any time. Contact KC5UOZ for DTMF codes. W5TAH noted that planned remodeling of Hilton may necessitate some “remodeling” of our ATV Skycam installation.

·        Education: AC5CV and KC5UEW will deliver Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge training at Baylor University on November 12 and 19. K5YKC and WB5MBO helped a local Cub Scout pack with a JOTA effort on October 15, using the HOTARC trailer at First Baptist Church of Elm Mott.

·        Public Relations: Nothing to report.

·        Special Events: Grant Gilliam KE5ERW agreed to serve as Special Events Coordinator for 2006. K5YKC reported that we have reserved the meeting room at the Summer Palace at noon on Saturday, December 10 for the HOTARC Christmas luncheon.

New Business

·         Regional Disaster Expo: KC5KNI reported that HOTARC is invited to participate in this event at the Waco Convention Center on November 10-11, where over 1000 students are registered to attend various mini-workshops and tour the exhibits provided by HOTARC and others. We will bring the HOTARC trailer. Volunteers to help: KE5ERW, KD5SMC, KC5KNI, W5JRM, AC5CV, KC5NT, and K5YKC—meeting at Luby’s 6:30 pm Thursday November 3 for planning.

·         Nominating Committee: The following volunteered to serve on the committee to identify Officers and a Director for 2006 Board: KB5SLI (chair), Mike Ross N5MVL, and Wayne Branscum KD5SMC.

Motion to adjourn heard from Bill Feltenbereger KD5UEW at approximately 8:14 PM.

The program this evening was “Home-Brew Night,” with interesting presentations given by AC5CV, KC5NT, KC5UOZ, W5NCD, and W5JRM. (see photos below) Thanks guys!

Stand-by: RACES Is Coming Back!

by Ed Hynan, KC5KNI,
McLennan County Emergency Coordinator

With all of the natural disasters that have occurred this year, and with the outstanding support provided by Amateur Radio, the State of Texas is very interested in reviving the RACES program. It was discussed at a recent club meeting that we should just get dual accreditation for all current ARES Members. While this seems to be the logical way to go about reviving RACES in McLennan County, we need to be careful as the State has some specific requirements for State RACES members. RACES membership will provide documentation and credentials for members at the state level and provide the credentials that will allow for Emergency Communications support to be easily provided outside your local area of residence.

All of the details are not finalized as of yet. We will integrate the McLennan County RACES program with the upcoming update of ARES information and training documentation scheduled to be completed by April 2006.
