Lessons learned from Hurricane Beryl
A lot has changed since my last writing. Hurricane Beryl has broken many records. It was the first Category 4 storm ever in June.
Beryl was also the earliest recorded Category 5. Even though it was only a Cat 1 when it made landfall, Beryl has caused an
estimated $32 Billion in damages. More than 4 million homes were without power for days and weeks in Texas alone.
People were not prepared for loss of services. Most people did not have
backup power or enough food or water. People have become dependent on
service providers quickly restoring service. When that isn’t possible, society
breaks down quickly. Cell communication was disrupted and 911 became
inoperative in areas.
Beryl originally plotted to hit Brownsville. If it had, we likely would have been
severely impacted. There are still many in Texas without power weeks later.
Of course ARES and RACES were activated to monitor and assist. This is the
reason we train as we do.
We are currently in a lull but watch out for the rest of the season. It may be
one for the record books!
As always the ARES team is ready to deploy if needed. Thanks to everyone
who is part of the team!
If you are interested in becoming a member of McLennan County ARES, go
to the HOTARC Web site under the frequently asked questions and
download the application.
E-mail or mail the completed application according to the instructions listed at the bottom of the application. Your application will
be processed and you will receive an ARES ID Card As always, the ARES team is ready to deploy if needed. Thanks to everyone
who is part of the team!
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.
